I’ve just ordered my second invert book from youth specialties after reading the sample on their site and finding that I think it not only will be excellent for the high school student I want to read it with, but it hit home and addressed something I’d been struggling with as well. This book is called Living a Life that Matters and it’s a study in the book of Ecclesiastes. Here’s an excerpt from p. 17 (part of the available sample):
Solomon, the poet-king, learned the truth about life on earth
the hard way. Before continuing your own search for something to fill the nagging emptiness of life—and before deciding you’re already a Christian, so why bother—why not find out what he learned when he conducted the greatest experiment the world has ever known? It could change everything about the way you live the rest of your life.
The reason this struck me is that I’ve discovered that nothing I’ve done in life has brought true contentment. This has been a source of great disquiet in my spirit as I felt that with everything going so well, I should be happy. I’ve been able to experience just in the past few years several life-long dreams coming true, and I felt that my lack of contentment was a lack of thankfulness for all the amazing things God had brought about.
But the truth is, it wasn’t enough because nothing is enough. You can get everything you ever wanted and it wouldn’t be enough, the only thing that brings true peace and contentment, well, it’s not a thing, it’s God. So my experiences, as wonderful and exciting as they were, only showed me even more my need to press into God, to know God more, and it looks like that’s the direction this book is going.
The other Invert book that I’ve used was with a youth group, and I used it as sort of the home journal guide to a series that we were doing on the basics of the faith. It worked really well even though it wasn’t part of a curriculum, and so if you’re looking for a journaling exercise devotional type of thing that you can send home with your youth, this would be an excellent one to look into as it helps youth to establish a routine of prayer and bible study.
